The ViewLondon Review
Fancy a house party atmosphere, but not in your actual house? The Melange Social Club could satisfy. The VenueSituated on the edge of Regent’s Canal and Kingsland Road, Melange Social Club is hard to miss. From the outside you’ll see draped curtains, a funky hippy-style door sign and a bit of cardboard in the window stating ‘Private Party – We Do NOT Sell Alcohol’. Yes, whether you’ve got intention to go in or not, you’ll have to take a peek when you pass by.
Once inside, it becomes even more random. You’ll find old musical instruments, books, vintage Singer sewing machines and dusty, dirty furniture. The BYO drink licence also ensures the place is as messy as a regular house party – the bar and sofas are full of crushed cans and empty wine bottles. It could be an art student’s digs.
The AtmosphereThe atmosphere at Melange Social Club is dependant on the type of night held – this place has poetry readings, chocolate tasting nights and numerous gigs. What’s certain about the people who hang out here is they know how to party – the last person is usually chucked out mid morning the next day. However, don’t expect the tunes to go on until this time, the club is effectively in a residential area so everything quietens down around 5am.
The MusicFor people unfamiliar with the up and coming Dalston music scene, head to Melange Social Club. Think live bands and satisfying electro DJ beats. It’s not unheard of for random raw talent in the crowd to start making music – if you’ve got a skill and are keen to be appreciated, when the scheduled acts quieten down, join in! Don’t be surprised to see a few musically-known names in here. Old timers will recall memories of strumming with Pete Doherty and there are regular faces from smaller bands on the new indie music scene.
The DrinkAs it clearly states in the window – this place has no alcohol licence and works on a Bring Your Own (BYO) policy. Corkage is charged occasionally and usually costs around £5 and there is often a door fee of the same price. You’re basically paying £10 to get in and drink your own booze – not bad!
The Last WordGrim, messy and random. Melange Social Club is fantastic for those who are sick of trendy bars, are on a budget and want to experience a relaxed house party vibe without having to clean up the mess in the morning!
